9 Things to Know Before Getting Stem Cell Shoulder Treatment in Mexico

Shoulder pain that has not improved with rest, physical therapy, or injections leaves many people weighing surgery. Dream Body Clinic in Bucerías, Mexico (near Puerto Vallarta) offers a non-surgical option: an ultrasound-guided injection of 50 million mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into the shoulder joint. Here is what to know before you decide.

1. It is a 50 million cell, ultrasound-guided injection

The treatment is an injection of 50 million allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells from Wharton’s jelly (umbilical cord tissue) and placenta, placed into the shoulder joint under ultrasound guidance by one of the clinic’s treating physicians. There is no bone marrow harvest and no liposuction. The goal is to calm joint inflammation and support repair of cartilage, labrum, tendon, and ligament tissue.

2. The cells are grown on site and never frozen

The cells are expanded in the clinic’s own ISO-rated lab in Bucerías. They are not frozen for storage and not shipped in from another city. Cell expansion for these procedures is regulated in Mexico by COFEPRIS.

3. One published price, with imaging and bloodwork included

One shoulder is $3,500 USD and both shoulders are $7,000 USD. The price includes the MRI, blood panel, physician consultation, the 50 million cells, the injection, and a post-treatment rehab protocol. If imaging shows you are not a candidate, you pay only for the MRI ($500) and blood panel ($300), not the treatment fee. For comparison, the clinic notes that non-expanded stem cell shoulder injections in the U.S. are commonly quoted at $5,000 to $15,000 per shoulder, and that shoulder surgery in the U.S. is commonly $15,000 to $50,000 or more before rehab.

4. It is used for several kinds of shoulder problems

The clinic uses it for:

  • Shoulder osteoarthritis, with better expectations in milder grades
  • Partial rotator cuff tears, including the supraspinatus
  • Partial labrum tears, including SLAP tears
  • Partial ligament injuries
  • Focal cartilage lesions and chondromalacia
  • Shoulder tendinopathy and chronic tendinitis
  • Chronic shoulder pain after failed conservative care

5. It is not right for everyone

Stem cells do not bridge a complete tear or remove bone spurs. The clinic does not treat:

  • Complete rotator cuff, labrum, or ligament tears
  • Shoulders with large bone spurs (osteophytes)
  • Patients with cancer in the past 5 years
  • Patients who had a cortisone injection in the last 3 months

The clinic also says about 5% of people are non-responders, and no result is guaranteed.

6. You get an MRI on site before any treatment

Imaging is done at the clinic on an open MRI, and a physician reviews it with you before treatment. A recent MRI, CT, or ultrasound report can be emailed ahead of time so a physician can tell you whether you are likely a candidate before you fly. A new scan is still done on site for patient safety.

7. Plan on about five days in town

A typical schedule: arrive and rest, MRI and bloodwork, MRI review and payment, treatment, then fly home. Treatment is at DBC Medical Center, Carmen Serdán 22, Bucerías, Nayarit, near Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR). Airport and clinic transfers are included if you stay in the clinic’s hotel zone.

8. Recovery is quick, but the healing window is slow

  • Same day: most patients leave the clinic.
  • 2 to 3 days: most return to desk work.
  • Weeks 1 to 6: avoid high-impact and overhead loading while the cells settle in. A 4-week rehab plan follows an initial 2 weeks of taking it easy.
  • Months 3 to 6: typical peak improvement.
  • Months 6 to 12: continued remodeling, with follow-up at 3, 6, and 12 months.

The injected cells stay active for roughly 8 to 12 months. Some patients report benefit for years afterward.

9. Prepare before you go

  • Stop NSAIDs at least 1 week before and stay off them at least 2 weeks after.
  • Stop prednisone at least 1 week before and for at least 2 weeks after.
  • Do not book within 3 months of a cortisone injection, and avoid those shots for at least 6 months after.
  • Hold anti-inflammatory supplements such as turmeric and ginkgo for at least 2 weeks after.

Documented adverse events at the clinic are under 2%, mostly temporary soreness at the injection site, and the clinic reports no shoulder-injection infections in 9 years of stem cell use.
