9 Things to Know Before Getting Stem Cell Early Onset Dementia Treatment in Mexico
Early onset dementia affects memory, thinking and daily activities before the age of 65, and it is hard on the whole family. Decisions about treatment should be made together with the patient’s neurologist. If you are exploring stem cell therapy as an added option, here are nine things to know before you book treatment at Dream Body Clinic in BucerÃas, near Puerto Vallarta.
1. The protocol is a 50 million cell intrathecal injection
Treatment is an injection of 50 million mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into the cerebrospinal fluid (an intrathecal injection), performed by an anesthesiologist using a fine needle. The clinic describes the aim as supporting reduced brain inflammation and neuroregeneration. It is offered as an addition to regular dementia care, not a replacement for it.
2. It is not a cure, and results vary
The clinic says there is no guarantee of results, and that a small percentage of patients may not respond. Research on MSCs in dementia and Alzheimer’s disease is ongoing, and this is a clinic protocol, not an FDA-approved U.S. indication. Continue any prescribed medications and care unless the patient’s own doctor advises otherwise.
3. The cells are delivered into the spinal fluid
Because the cells go into the cerebrospinal fluid, the clinic says they don’t have to cross the blood-brain barrier on their way to the brain. The clinic describes the cells as interacting with immune cells and brain support cells such as microglia and astrocytes, and as releasing signaling molecules. These are the mechanisms the clinic is targeting, not a promised outcome for every patient.
4. The cells are made in the clinic’s own lab
The cells are allogeneic MSCs from Wharton’s jelly (umbilical cord tissue) and placenta from live, healthy births, expanded in the clinic’s on-site, ISO-rated, COFEPRIS-certified lab. The clinic says its lab has more than 8 years of experience cultivating MSCs.
5. Blood thinners rule treatment out
The clinic says this treatment cannot be done if the patient is on blood thinners. If the patient takes a blood thinner, call the clinic for guidance before booking, and never stop a prescribed blood thinner without the prescribing doctor’s agreement. A full blood panel, reviewed by physicians, is done before treatment, and the clinic provides documentation for travel home.
6. One published price
The all-inclusive package is $3,500 USD. It covers the 50 million cell intrathecal injection by an anesthesiologist, a full blood panel, physician review and travel documentation.
7. Plan for at least five days in town
Day 1 arrive and rest, Day 2 bloodwork, payment and cell preparation, Day 3 the intrathecal injection, Day 4 post-treatment rest day, Day 5 fly home with transport to the airport. If you stay longer, the days don’t need to be consecutive. The patient will need a companion for the trip.
8. Know the risks and who isn’t treated
The clinic reports that about 1 in 10 patients have intense lower back pain near the injection site, lasting a few hours to a few days, and about 1 in 10 have a migraine-like headache, sometimes with nausea. About 1 in 20 have a slight fever or headache. Any injection carries a small risk of infection. The clinic provides medication for the side effects and does not treat anyone who has had cancer in the past 5 years. Seek emergency care for a severe or worsening headache, fever with a stiff neck, new weakness or numbness, or loss of bladder control, and don’t wait for a clinic appointment.
9. Progress is gradual and individual
The page says the cells stay active in the body for about 8 months to a year while they interact with immune cells. Any change is likely to be gradual and varies by person, and may be hard to separate from the natural course of the condition. Before you travel, record a baseline with the patient’s own doctor, such as memory and cognitive test scores, daily activities and caregiver notes, so any change can be measured over time.
