9 Things to Know Before Getting Stem Cell Wrist Treatment in Mexico

Chronic wrist pain from arthritis, tendon or ligament damage, or carpal tunnel symptoms can make typing, gripping and lifting a daily struggle. If you are weighing a non-surgical option, here are nine things to know before you book stem cell wrist treatment at Dream Body Clinic in Bucerías, near Puerto Vallarta.

1. The protocol is 25 million stem cells injected into the wrist joint

The treatment is a targeted intra-articular injection of 25 million mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) directly into the wrist joint. The aim is to help calm inflammation and support cartilage and soft-tissue repair, as a minimally invasive alternative to surgery. The clinic uses ultrasound guidance to place the injection precisely.

2. The cells are made in the clinic’s own lab

The MSCs come from Wharton’s jelly and placenta from live, healthy births. They are processed in Dream Body Clinic’s on-site, COFEPRIS-certified and ISO-rated laboratory, which the clinic says has more than 8 years of experience cultivating MSCs.

3. There is one published price, and the MRI is included

The all-inclusive package is $2,400 USD per wrist. It includes the 25 million cell injection, a full blood panel and a wrist MRI, administered by medical professionals in a certified facility. Both wrists can be treated on the same trip.

4. It is used for common wrist problems, including carpal tunnel symptoms

The page describes it for chronic wrist pain, osteoarthritis, partial tears, and carpal tunnel symptoms, especially for people who want to avoid or delay surgery. For carpal tunnel, the approach focuses on lowering the excess inflammation and fluid pressure that compress the median nerve. Results vary with the severity and duration of the condition.

5. It is not right for everyone

An MRI decides candidacy. Advanced osteophytes (bone spurs) or a complete tear are the contraindications named on the page, and treatment may not go ahead if prior imaging shows them. The clinic does not treat anyone who has had cancer in the past 5 years, as a precaution. A very small percentage of patients are non-responders, and the clinic says this can happen with any treatment.

6. You need an MRI, and you get it on site

An MRI is required, even if you already have a recent one. The clinic’s open MRI isn’t claustrophobic, but space is limited, so check the coil image on the page to be sure your wrist fits. The space from the bed to the magnet is about 1 ft (30 cm). If you won’t fit, call and the clinic will schedule your MRI at a partner lab. If the MRI shows you aren’t a candidate, you pay only $500 for the MRI and $300 for the blood panel.

7. Plan for at least five days in town

A typical schedule: Day 1 arrive and rest, Day 2 MRI and bloodwork, Day 3 MRI review, then payment, Day 4 treatment, Day 5 fly home. If you stay longer, the days don’t need to be consecutive.

8. Recovery is gradual

Some tightness or soreness the night after treatment or the next day is the most commonly reported side effect. The clinic advises two weeks off exercise or sports, then a 4-week physical rehab protocol it provides, and a light return to activity after about 6 weeks. Improvements are commonly reported over the following months, and results vary. As with any injection, there is a very small risk of infection. The clinic uses iodine and microdacyn to reduce it.

9. Preparation matters

  • Stop NSAIDs at least 1 week before treatment and for at least 2 weeks after (preferably 6 weeks).
  • Avoid cortisone or corticosteroid injections for 3 months before treatment, and for at least 3 months after (preferably 6).
  • Stop prednisone at least 1 week before and 2 weeks after.
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory supplements such as ginkgo biloba or turmeric for at least 2 weeks after.

The clinic says these drugs interfere with how MSCs respond to inflammation. Always check with your own doctor before stopping any prescribed medication.
